Event Details

In addition to our paid-for event 12:grn:hrs - design a green car in a day! and due to popular demand we will be opening the MORNING SESSION ONLY as a free event during the London Design Festival 2011
at the Design Council, 34 Bow Street, London, WC2E 7DL, UK.

The aim of the event is to create an opportunity for an intense day of design and eco brainstorming to create a truly unique green car design concept.   The MORNING SESSION will consist of a keynote speech by Kenny Schachter and then 20 minute presentations by Dr. Siavash H Mahdavi from Within Lab, Iain Taylor from Sage Automotive, Mike Hardcastle from Light Tape UK, Catherine Watkins from Camira Fabrics, and Micol Costi and Claudia Reder from Material ConneXion Milan.

9.00 am - Kenny Schachter, art curator and dealer, creative instigator and car afficionado will open the morning.

Kenny SchachterBIO - Kenny Schachter has been curating contemporary art exhibits in museums and galleries for in excess of 20 years and has taught art history at the graduate level at New York University, The New School for Social Research, and Columbia University's Masters of Fine Art.  He is presently authoring features on art for British GQ Magazine beginning in 2011.  Schachter received planning permission to erect Zaha Hadid's first building in England, situated on Hoston Square.  He deals in international art from impressionism and modernism to the art and design of today.  In addition, he has exhibited his own artworks internationally including one-person exhibits at Sandra Gering Gallery in NYC and International 3 in Manchester.  The latest design commissions are boats by both Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas.

9.30 - Dr. Siavash H Mahdavi - Within Lab

Siavash MahdaviBIO - Dr. Siavash H. Mahdavi studied a B.Sc. in Mechatronics Engineering at King's College London.  He went on to study a M.Sc. in Intelligent Systems at University College London and continued his research to complete a doctorate in Evolutionary Robotics.  It was during his doctoral research that he first embarked upon developing a system of customizing a material's properties using artificial intelligence and additive layer manufacturing.  Since then, Siavash has published 10+ papers on the 'microstructure optimisation' and has given lectures at numerous international conferences.  Siavash started Complex Matters Ltd. in 2005, a design consultancy that works with designers and engineers in creating objects with optimised structures that enable them to exhibited unparalleled material properties.

 

10.00 - Iain Taylor - Sage Automotive Interiors

BIO - Iain Taylor is the Design and Development Director for Sage AI in Europe.  Sage AI is a world class manufacturer of Automotive Interior fabrics and have a clear environmental vision that covers both their manufacturing and their development.  Iain graduated from Leeds University in 1989 and since then has spent most of his working career in the field of automotive textiles and is a Visiting Research Fellow at Huddersfield University.  As Director of Design and Development Iain has extablished clear links with Academia working with both the University of York and Huddersfield on various proejects aimed at improving the sustainability of automotive textile applications.

10.30 - Mike Hardcastle - Light Tape UK

Mike HardcastleBIO - Mike Hardcastle Managing Director of Light Tape UK Limited trained as a Mechanical Engineer working in the Textile Machinery and Machine Tool Marketplace.  Then during the 80's he went to work for Shell in the Middle East and came back to work for Xerox in the late 80's and early 90's.  From '92 to '08 Hardcastle was involved in the Wide Format Printer Market and ran several successful Businesses starting Light Tape UK Limited in 2005 to launch Light Tape® on the UK Market.  Light Tape UK Limited launched a revolutionary, cost-effective slim and flexible electroluminescent lighting strip system that operates from low amperage supplies to provide numerous applications for use in industrial and commercial areas.

11.00 - Catherine Watkins - Camira Fabrics

BIO - Design and Development Manager Contract Fabrics at Camira, a company dedicated to being the natural choice for fabric solutions in the global interiors market.

11.30 - Micol Costi and Claudia Reder - Material ConneXion

BIO

Micol CostiMicol Costi, Director of Library and Materials Reasearch.  Responsible for Material ConneXion’s Italian research team Costi's expertise is related to a variety of fields including product design, architecture, automotive and furniture. She has curated exhibitions about product design for sustainability and co-authored publications about innovative materials and eco design. She has taught at Scuola Politecnica di Design and IED Istituto Europeo di Design Milano. Previously she worked for Harbinger and Peregrine Systems in Italy, for Fortune 500 companies in Germany and studied Product and Fashion Design in Italy and Germany with a focus on Materials and Sustainable Design.

 

Claudia RederClaudia Reder, Senior Materials Specialist.  Reder works as a Materials Researcher at Material ConneXion Milano. Her activities include planning and organizing of exhibitions, often with a focus on sustainability: Esperienza Italia 150° - Material ConneXion@Stazione Futuro, Greenlife, Ecomind, tradefairs and research and consulting projects for Fiat, Milan Chamber of Commerce, City of Milan, Samsung, Kone, Clarks, Snaidero and SME. Prior to joining Material ConneXion Claudia worked at Semeraro as a retail designer, studied Interior Design at IED Milano and Art History, Film and Media Science, English and Romance studies at Philipps University Marburg, Germany.
